This section describes the services, websites, and publications that can help you with child support.

Services

Child Support Services

Child support services are available in Charlottetown and Summerside. The provincial government program includes the following services:

  • Family Court Counsellors help parents assess the situation and provide mediation, when possible, to arrange custody, access and support agreements (Phone: 902-368-6928).
  • Child Support Guidelines Officers help parents understand the process to obtain child support orders and agreements in the Family Court Division of the Supreme Court of PEI (Phone: 902-368-6220 or 902-888-8188)
  • The Recalculation Office will review support agreements and any changes to the situation that may affect support payments (Phone: 902-368-4109).
  • Maintenance Enforcement Program officers provide information about maintenance enforcement (Phone: 902-894-0383).

Family Court Counsellors

Family Court Counsellors are government employees who work at the Family Law Centre in Charlottetown. Family Court Counsellors help people work out parenting arrangements and other separation issues. They also provide mediation services. However, Family Court Counsellors are not lawyers. They cannot help you get a divorce.

FamiliesChange.ca: This website contains information to help all members of the family cope with separation and divorce. There are resources for children, teens, and parents. There is also on online course called Online Parenting After Separation, which helps parents understand the importance of putting the needs of the children first.

Federal Child Support Guidelines: Step-By-Step: This guide includes worksheets to help parents figure out things like special or extraordinary expenses and undue hardship.

Honourable C.R. McQuaid Family Law Centre: The Family Law Centre houses the Family Court Counsellors Office, the Child Support Guidelines Office, the Recalculation Office, Maintenance Enforcement Program and Positive Parenting from Two Homes.

Community Legal Information Association: Provides legal information free of charge and administers the Lawyer Referral Service.
